A love of drawing (seemingly from birth) has, over the years, developed into a passion for the craft. Gifts of Dinky Toys as a kid sowed the seeds for an avid interest in cars, which has grown into an overwhelming interest in transport and all things technical. School over, I worked in engineering, which, though useful to my survival, did nothing to satisfy my ambition to be involved in the automotive design industry. I besieged Holden, the Australian division of General Motors, and was eventually accepted as a designer in their styling department, a dream come true. Actually being paid to draw cars all day was not unlike heaven on earth. During my time with them I was involved in the development of many major new models and seeing cars that I had helped design actually out on the roads is a thrill without equal. Thirteen years up the track, it was time for me to explore further the parameters of design and illustration by setting up my own freelance studio. My work has become varied and rewarding, taking me to many different environments within Australia and overseas. I have designed trains, boats, trucks, cars and exhibition displays. I have illustrated training manuals for a mining company, artworks commissioned by private clients, CD covers, and intricate cutaway images of Holden automobiles for their product brochures (a commission which enabled me to indulge in my long standing fascination with highly detailed cutaway illustration). I
use a wide variety of media in my work - airbrush, gouache, pastel,
marker, pen and ink and especially in graphics work, the computer. For
me though, nothing quite equals the sheer pleasure of working by hand
and producing an original and tactile piece of artwork, which can of
course be scanned, converted into electronic format and be reproduced
for commercial purposes where necessary. I
have taught master classes and workshops on rendering and, for nine
years, lectured to Industrial Design students at Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology in Victoria, Australia. I have the best job in the world and I thank God for giving me the talent in the first place. |
